Pigs
Here at Poppinghole Farm we raise our pigs in the woods. This gives the meat its unique flavour and texture as well as keeping the woodland in check from brambles and other unwanted undergrowth. They roam their wooded paddocks where they root up the woodland areas, spending lots of time feasting and foraging. They thrive on being outdoors and love their cosy pig styes which are filled with lots of straw to keep them warm on cold days.
Cattle
We keep a few cattle on the farm. This not only helps cross-grazing with the sheep and the horses but produces the most delicious marbled meat, which is naturally reared. We keep Sussex and Sussex-cross cattle which are native to the local area – the Weald of Sussex, Surrey and Kent. You will usually see calves running about the farm in the spring.
